- Description:
- Global left atrial (LA) dysfunction in heart failure is characterized by: (i) an increase in LA volume (LA dilation) associated with progressive impairment of LA mechanical function culminating in atrial fibrillation, (ii) deficient atrial natriuretic peptide (NP) processing and eventually deficient atrial NP synthesis and NP resistance, (iii) decreased sympatho‐inhibition by cardiopulmonary reflexes, and (iv) development of atrial sympatho‐excitatory reflexes.
