  • Al3+ in the soil solution relative to pH. The curve in (a) was fitted according to the LOWESS data‐smoothing function. The lines in (b) pertain to soils with little carbon and conform to Log10{Al3+}/{H+}3 = 8.80 for pH > 4.2 and Log10{Al3+}/{H+}3 = −4.28 + 3.11pH for pH < 4.2. Circle areas are proportional to the organic carbon content. Data are taken from Wright et al. (1987), Wright & Wright (1987), Wright et al. (1989), David & Lawrence (1996), and Wesselink et al. (1996). See Table 1.
