  • Effect of SP on Phrenic motoneurons. (A1, upper trace) Spontaneous depolarization of a PMN during an inspiratory phase in the in vitro brainstem–spinal cord preparation under control conditions. The lower trace (∫C4) represents the integrated response of the motoneuron population discharge recorded at the fourth cervical segment. (A2) The same PMN during bath application of SP. Note the longer action potential burst duration and the membrane potential depolarization. (B1–3) Same neuron as in A. Phrenic motoneuron depolarization induced by DC current injection (140 and 240 pA) under control conditions (B1) and during SP application (B2) where the neuron is maintained at the same membrane potential as in B1 (−69 mV). The curves in B3 were obtained by plotting the number of spikes per second against the depolarizing current injected. They illustrate the increased excitability of PMNs through the leftward shift of the open squares curve.
