  • Early intermediates in proOmpA translocation are formed at low ATP concentrations in the absence of a Δp. The translocation of [35S]proOmpA into urea‐treated IMVs derived from E.coli strain D10 was followed over time in the presence of 2 μM (A) or 2 mM ATP (B), and into native D10 IMVs in the presence of 2 mM ATP (C). Translocation reactions were performed as described in Materials and methods. At the indicated time points, samples were taken and proteinase K‐protected fragments were analysed by Tricine gels and autoradiography.
