  • The relationship between Ns (the number of strains per group) and variation in model realizations (here demonstrated with acetate concentrations for 50 realizations). The model was set up with biomass equally distributed between the 10 BFGs and kept at pH 6.5 for 400 h. Ns was set at (A) 1, (B) 10 and (C) 30 strains per group; all other conditions are as specified in Table S8. D shows how the variance of acetate (over 50 realizations) changes with Ns.
