  • Description:
  • (a) Clifftop detachment scar at 10 m asl and view south. A 7 m long triple fractured boulder is situated at R. Its most likely source is the clifftop at the lower edge of the detachment scar over which an extreme wave flowed, shearing off a single joint‐bounded boulder and transporting it onshore and depositing it so forcibly that it fractured into three contiguous fragments. In the far distance a zone of deposited boulders runs up to >20 m asl, while the large foreground boulder forms part of a second boulder zone, with the seaward limits of each shown by dotted lines. These two lines form a funnel leading toward a col at 7.3 m asl (out of shot to right), which acted as a spillway for a large flow overwashing the peninsula at this point. (b) Alternative view of the same detachment scar and boulder looking NE. The cliff is near‐vertical and extends into deep water. This detachment scenario is modelled later in this paper using a technique by Hansom et al. () to retrodict the wave that may have been responsible.
