Asset Details

  • Description:
  • A 69-year-old woman presented with 1-month history of sudden hoarseness. An abnormality had also been detected on her chest radiograph. She did not complain of fever, cough, sputum production, or other symptoms. She had smoked more than 10 cigarettes daily for 35 years. She had no history of pulmonary tuberculosis or use of oral corticosteroids. On examination, her left vocal cord was found to be immobile. Direct palpation with a fiberscope tip revealed that the cord was not fixed but paralyzed. A chest radiograph demonstrated an infiltration with pleural thickening in the left upper lobe (Figure 1). Computed tomograms of the chest showed marked thick pleural reaction and fibrosis around the arch of the aorta (Figure 2). There was no evidence of mediastinal mass.
