  • Description:
  • (a) The neutral winds from the TIE‐GCM, (b) total available energy density (ε𝑡), (c) kinetic energy density (ε𝑘), and (d) available potential energy density (ε𝑝) over the Southern Hemisphere at magnetic latitudes poleward of −50° at pressure levels corresponding to 142‐, 123‐, and 111‐km altitudes for IMF (By, Bz) values of (0.0, −10.0) nT. The perspective looks up from below the thermosphere. Note that neutral wind vectors are plotted against a fixed arrow length of 200 m/s. The color scales for ε𝑡 and ε𝑘 and those for ε𝑝 are different with contour intervals of 80 × 102 and 6 × 102 J/kg, respectively. TIE‐GCM = Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Electrodynamics General Circulation Model; IMF = interplanetary magnetic field.
