Numbers refer to the main kinds of rocks (simplified from Friedrich, 2000). 1, Nea Kameni lavas (1570–1950); 2, Palea Kamaeni lavas (46–726 AD); 3, Minoan Tuff (approximately 3.6 Kya); 4, Thirasia lava shield (approximately 20 Kya); 5, Skaros lava shield (approximately 80–50 Kya); 6, cinder cones of north‐east Thira (approximately 80–50 Kya); 7, pyroclastic deposits of the first and second cycle (approximately 203–180 Kya; approximately 60 Kya to 1600 BC); 8, peristeria lava shield (approximately 530–350 Kya); 9, early submarine Akrotiri centres (approximately 2000–500 Kya); 10, pre‐volcanic basement (Late Mesozoic).
