  • Effect of β, the log of the preferred predator : prey mass ratio, on waves in size spectra: (A) β = 1.0; (B) β = 2.0; (C) β = 4.0. Scaled deviation is the difference between the size spectrum at time 15 and the steady‐state spectrum, the scaling being relative to the largest deviation in the size range ln(0.01) ≤ x ≤ ln(220) at this time. Spectra are initialized by making independent random perturbations from the steady state. Values of the feeding‐kernel width, σ, are chosen to ensure that the steady state was an attractor: (A) σ = 0.3; (B) σ = 0.8; (C) σ = 2.0. Parameter values are as in Table 1.
