  • Outer appearance and matrix composition of the snottites from the ‘Drei Kronen und Ehrt’ field site in the Harz Mountains, Germany. A. A snottite hanging from the ceiling of the mine. Note that the ceiling is covered by a crystalline crust that consists of Fe sulfate minerals and gypsum. B. Concentrations of sulfate, ferrous iron and ferric iron in the aqueous phase of a snottite. C. A back‐scattered electron (BSE) image of the material of one of the snottites. Large euhedral crystals of gypsum are covered and surrounded by omnipresent tiny jarosite crystals.
